Transient Spaces

This page is dedicated to the ongoing multimedia documentation of a particular community influenced by both the real and virtual realm (without arguing the ambiguities surrounding the terminological couplet just yet).

Transient Space

At this moment I plan on documenting the body modification community within Australia, of which I too am a part of. I hope to interact with and compare the dynamics of relationships in real life (such as at various meets that are organised throughout the year) to those that occur online.

It is argued that “subcultures” as we understand them are being redefined through online communities. No longer is there the exclusivity through immediate spatial locality or alienation through ignorance; the Internet offers connectivity between those within a subculture as well as ready exposure to those not part of the community.

Through this documentation I hope to collect views from both inside and outside the bodmod community on how this subculture is represented online and what implications this has in social interactions offline.
